Privacy & security

Privacy isn’t a setting you toggle. It’s built into what the app can and can’t do.

No internet permission, period

Parsing, ML, OCR and voice all happen on-device. Nothing can ever leave your phone, not even by accident or through a bug.

Optional app lock

Fingerprint, face, or device PIN. Required on launch and when returning from the background. It won’t lock you out mid-task when you open the camera or photo picker from within Amla.

One-tap data reset

Wipe everything stored in the app. Your original bank SMS are untouched and simply re-read on the next scan.

✉️

Reading your bank SMS

No manual data entry required. Amla reads the texts you already get and does the work for you.

Automatic inbox reading

Scans on launch and parses new texts live as they arrive, foreground or background. Scans are self-healing and never duplicate your transactions.

Hybrid parser

A deterministic rules engine plus an on-device ML model (TensorFlow Lite) cover each other’s gaps; the higher-confidence result wins.

Smart, generalizable detection

Recognizes real debits and credits by structure (settled verbs, currency-anchored amounts, account evidence) rather than brittle phrase lists. OTPs, promotions, payment reminders, mandates and balance statements are correctly ignored.

Bank identification

Resolves cryptic sender headers (BP-HDFCBK-S → HDFC Bank, VM-SBIMFD → SBI Mutual Fund) into readable names, and flags genuinely new banks for you to confirm.

Payment-method detection

UPI, card, net-banking, NEFT/IMPS, ATM, POS, wallet and more, inferred from the message itself.

🏷️

Categorization

Automatic guesses, always correctable, and Amla learns from every correction.

Automatic category guessing

From the sender and message content, with a one-tap correction whenever it guesses wrong.

Learned per-merchant rules

Correct a category once and it’s remembered, then applied to that merchant’s future texts automatically.

Bulk apply

Categorize or hide one row and Amla offers to do the same for its untouched peers.

Sub-categories

An optional finer label under any category: Dining → Restaurants / Cafés / Delivery.

Custom tags

Cross-cutting labels like “Goa Trip” or “Reimbursable,” with bulk-tagging.

Self-transfers recognized

Moves between your own accounts are kept out of income and expense totals.

✏️

Fixing what the SMS didn’t get right

Your corrections are permanent; a re-scan will never overwrite them.

Correct any transaction

Flip a misread direction (an expense parsed as income), rename the merchant, adjust the amount or date, and set the payment method when the text didn’t reveal one (for example, marking a loan debit as a net-banking mandate).

Adding transactions yourself

Everything the SMS can’t see, you can add in seconds.

Manual entry

Alongside parsed texts, with full edit and delete.

Quick-add templates

Save any transaction as a one-tap template (the daily bus ticket, the weekly milk delivery), managed right from the Home screen.

Receipt scanning (OCR)

Photograph or pick a receipt and an on-device text-recognition model pulls out the amount, merchant and date. The image attaches to the transaction.

Voice entry

Dictate an expense in natural language, like “add toilet paper 150 rupees from Jio Supermarket,” and Amla fills in the amount, merchant and note. Uses Android’s on-device speech recognition and degrades gracefully where that isn’t available.*

* Voice entry and receipt OCR rely on your device's on-device capabilities; availability varies by phone. Amla is Android-only and currently in early access; SMS detection is most battle-tested on Indian bank formats today, and generalizes structurally elsewhere.
